The war was but a few days old when on July 3 the wing added still another first -this time a tragic one. Major Amos L. Sluder of Sumter, South Carolina, commanding officer of the 'Headhunters' squadron, was the first American airman to sacrifice his life in the new war. On his last mission, Major Sluder was leading his flight in a close support mission in the vicinity of P'an'gyo-Ri. As they reconnoitered the area, Sluder spotted approximately ninety vehicles-mostly tanks-approaching in a column. Followed closely by his wingman, Sluder peeled off for the attack, although it meant flying straight into a concentrated fire from which there was slight chance of survival.
The jets blasted down across the enemy column at three top level, slashing at the concentrated tanks with rockets and fifty caliber. Midway in the attack, Sluder's F-80 shuddered under the impact of a head-on explosion with a tank shell. The shock shook off the tip tanks, and Sluder pulled the crippled plane away.
His wingman, Captain Verne F. Peterson, called Sluder on the radio. 'Boss, you're on fire,' he said. 'You'd better bail out.' 'Head me south, Pete,' Sluder replied. Those were his last words. Almost immediately his F-80 went into an abrupt dive and crashed." Source:
