Description
Sheremetyevo is still the home of Aeroflot, and is effectively two airports, located on either side of the two parallel runways. To the north is the domestic terminal, Sheremetyevo 1, a long low building that is now very dated indeed but sees many of the more interesting movements, although these can be few and far between. This side of the airport has a variety of ramps upon which all sorts of aircraft can be parked, but unfortunately there are no views from anywhere landside. For those flying from here views are again limited to what can be seen on the walk out to the aircraft. Airbridges haven’t arrived here yet.
On the south side, Terminal 2 was built for the 1980 Olympics and is now seriously showing its age, having had little money spent on it in the last 20 years. A restaurant on the fifth floor means that for the price of a meal at a window table some of the distant aircraft parked on the north side can be identified. Airside some views of traffic arriving and departing can be had, but as most passengers are segregated into ‘holding pens’ to await their flight it is best to make a circuit of the terminal first. Recent defections of airlines to Domodedovo mean that traffic here is down, and with mostly Aeroflot and a variety of standard European visitors to watch, Sheremetyevo 2 can be quite disappointing. Aeroflot has also had a clear out, with some of its Il-76s succumbing to several large mechanical diggers, which cut them up in 2004. The cargo area is now more often empty than containing anything interesting.
If you are an international adventurer why not try life at the end of the runways? There is a shuttle bus service between Terminal 2 and Terminal 1, but try to find the 817 service which also travels this route and for a few kopeks you should be able to get on (standing on the side of the road and sticking your hand out seems to work) and off at will, although working out which old lady is the conductress is a little more of a problem. As you travel around towards the threshold of Runway 25L the frustration of a large concrete wall will eventually give way to occasional sections which have either collapsed or given way to a high fence. You need to get off the bus as it approaches the landing lights and here a large area of waste ground affords excellent views of landing aircraft. Using your camera here is possible but you need to try to draw as little attention to yourself as possible. Continue walking under the threshold of 25R and on your right a series of tails appear. They belong to an aviation technical school which uses these ageing relics for instructional use. When landings are from the east, the prospect of watching from the approach to 07L/R is there, but you need to be somewhat of a jungle explorer to find suitable spots. Next to Terminal 2 is a large plot of land, which was set aside for the building of a new terminal, and at last things might be moving along with this development.
