Description
Amman serves as the major gateway for travellers visiting Jordan, but although it is quite a stable country many of its immediate neighbours are not and for that reason care should be taken when showing any real interest in aircraft.
The windows in the restaurant area landside give a partial view of the ramp, but that’s about it. The runways are on either side of the approach road and two crescent shaped terminals handle the main traffic, one being used by Royal Jordanian, the other is used by foreign airlines.
Between the two runways are Royal Jordanian’s maintenance base and a cargo terminal, but even anything parked airside in the terminal will be very difficult to see and because of the heat haze, registrations are impossible to read. Photography around the airport is strictly prohibited and on no account should you be seen around the perimeter.
Royal Jordanian uses a hub-and-spoke operation and arrivals from many points in the Middle East take place mid-morning to connect with the long haul services operated by its A340s. New airlines such as Air Universal and Star Airlines have large TriStar fleets and some of these are usually present, although Jordan Aviation’s aircraft are harder to see. To the right of the terminal is a large hangar and ramp, which is usually occupied by military helicopters and several Royal Jordanian Air Force C-130s.
